  • According to the Center for Disease Control, more than 50% of people in the United States will be diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder during their lifetime; and in a given year, 1 in 5 Americans will experience a mental illness.

  • Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for individuals, ages 15-34.

  • In Shelby County there is an estimated one mental health provider for every 2,229 people, leaving fewer than 430 practitioners to serve the population of nearly 1,000,000 residents.

  • Nearly 1 in 7 women experience postpartum depression, yet 15% receive professional help, leaving a staggering 500,000-750,000 moms untreated each year.

  • Postpartum Depression is the most frequently occurring health issue that a new mother faces after childbirth.

  • African Americans have additional risk factors and are twice as likely to experience postpartum depression.

  • Multiple barriers exist because of fears, stigmas, misconceptions, cultural norms, beliefs and underlying or undetected mental health concerns that hinder screening and treatment.
